However, one question that leaves this research unanswered is the exact nature of the statistical information that people use for segmentation purposes. Previous studies of statistical learning in other modalities have indicated that infants and adults are sensitive to statistics with a conditional probability, a higher-order statistic that encodes the likelihood that one element predicts the existence of another element (Aslin, Saffran – Newport, 1998; Aslin et al. 2001; Fiser – Aslin, 2001, 2002a, 2002b; Graf Estes, Evans, Alibali, Saffran, 2007). These experiments focused on whether a sensitivity similar to conditional probability was less than the action segmentation. In this study, we also assessed learning another type of statistic, common probability. Common probability is a different type of statistic that expresses the frequency with which the elements present themselves in common. In my experience, I have found that “conditions” are one of the last topics that make learners feel comfortable, regardless of how long they learn the language.
In summary, our results indicate significant similarities and differences in the nature of statistical learning. People can learn the conditional probabilities that structure dynamic human action, a result comparable to that achieved in other areas. Our results therefore indicate that the previous results of statistical learning in actions (Baldwin et al. 2008) are likely due, at least in part, to the individual`s sensitivity to conditional probability. On the other hand, we have also shown that there are significant differences in the ability to identify action segments on the basis of conditional probability; Only people who were particularly effective in detecting more frequent actions showed sensitivity to conditional probability. The ability to detect statistical irregularities in action is probably an essential part of the human measurement processing system, so that observers can use information from the bottom up to predict the evolution of events. Our knowledge of how learning about probability and common learning is likely to contribute to this process is an important step in understanding the function that has statistical learning in man`s ability to treat and make sense of human action.Posted on: April 15, 2021, by : greyson
